Residents and businesses in parts of Greater Accra will experience temporary interruptions in water supply from Thursday, August 6 to Saturday, August 8, 2026, as Ghana Water Ltd (GWL) undertakes planned maintenance works on the Kpong–Tema transmission pipelines.

According to a press release issued by the company on August 4, 2026, the exercise will involve the isolation and replacement of deteriorated sections of the 21-inch and 42-inch transmission pipelines between Kpong and Tema.
GWL explained that the maintenance forms part of its proactive infrastructure improvement programme aimed at enhancing the reliability, efficiency and sustainability of water supply to customers. Routine engineering assessments identified more than 300 metres of deteriorated pipeline sections requiring urgent replacement to prevent major pipeline failures, reduce water losses and ensure a more reliable water supply.
To facilitate the works, the Kpong Water Treatment Plant will be temporarily shut down while five sections of the transmission pipelines are isolated for replacement. As a result, customers supplied by the Kpong Water Supply System are expected to experience temporary water supply interruptions and reduced water pressure throughout the maintenance period.
The affected areas include the entire eastern part of Accra, including Gbetsile, Ashaiman, Katamanso, Zenu, Atadeka, Afienya, Appolonia, Prampram, Kpone and Dawhenya. All communities within the Tema Metropolis, including Spintex, Baatsona, Sakumono, Nungua and Teshie, as well as surrounding communities, will also be affected. Residents in Kpong, Akuse, Somanya, Atimpoku and nearby towns are expected to be affected.
GWL assured customers that its engineers and technical teams will work continuously throughout the three-day period to complete the replacement works on schedule and restore normal water supply as quickly as possible.
The company apologised for the inconvenience and urged affected customers to store adequate quantities of water before the maintenance begins and to use available supplies judiciously during the period.
It also encouraged hospitals, health facilities and other essential service providers to make the necessary contingency arrangements. Where feasible, GWL said it will deploy water tankers to support selected critical institutions during the maintenance period.
According to the company, replacing the deteriorated pipeline sections will significantly reduce pipeline bursts, minimise emergency shutdowns, improve operational efficiency and strengthen the long-term reliability of water supply to customers in Tema and the eastern corridor of the Greater Accra Region.
