The Squad Stands Strong: Ilhan Omar’s Victory Against the Tide

Rep. Ilhan Omar Triumphs in Primary, Resisting Pro-Israel Groups’ Influence

In a highly anticipated primary, Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-Minn.) successfully defended her seat against moderate challenger Don Samuels. This victory comes on the heels of losses by fellow progressive “Squad” members, Reps.

Jamaal Bowman (D-N.Y.) and Cori Bush (D-Mo.), who faced intense opposition from pro-Israel groups. Notably, these groups, including the United Democracy Project, had previously targeted Omar but largely refrained from investing in her race this year. Omar’s campaign significantly outspent Samuels’, allocating $2.6 million for ads compared to his $32,000.

Her win is a significant triumph for progressives, particularly in light of the losses by Bowman and Bush, which were influenced by substantial outside spending and personal controversies. With her primary victory, Omar is poised to win reelection in Minnesota’s reliably Democratic 5th Congressional District. This outcome underscores Omar’s resilience and popularity among her constituents, despite efforts to undermine her campaign.
