The Ghana Education Trust Fund (GETFund) has launched a nationwide initiative to mobilise classroom furniture for basic, junior and senior high schools facing critical shortages across the country.
Dubbed the Collective Furniture Appeal, the initiative is being implemented through GETFund’s Education Financing and Partnership Initiative (EFPI) and seeks to bring together corporate organisations, development partners, alumni associations, religious bodies, civil society groups, philanthropists and individuals to support schools in need.
According to GETFund, the initiative responds to numerous requests from schools across the country for essential furniture to improve teaching and learning conditions.
The items being sought include metal mono and dual desks and chairs for students, bunk beds, teachers’ tables and chairs, as well as other essential furniture required to create safe and conducive learning environments.
GETFund noted that despite sustained government investment in educational infrastructure, furniture shortages remain a challenge in several communities, with some pupils still sharing desks or learning under uncomfortable conditions.
The Fund said addressing the deficit would require a collective national effort to complement ongoing government interventions.
“The Collective Furniture Appeal is a response to numerous requests from schools across the country seeking support to provide essential classroom furniture,” GETFund said.
Under the initiative, corporate Ghana, non-governmental organisations, development partners, traditional authorities, religious organisations, community groups, alumni associations and the general public are being encouraged to donate new or gently used furniture.
GETFund said the initiative aligns with President John Mahama’s vision of transforming Ghana’s education sector through strategic partnerships, innovative financing and shared responsibility.
It also forms part of the broader EFPI programme, through which GETFund is seeking to expand private-sector and philanthropic participation in financing educational development.
The Fund said the initiative would complement government investments in school infrastructure, teaching and learning resources and other interventions aimed at improving educational outcomes.
GETFund called for broad public support for the campaign, stressing that adequate classroom furniture is essential to creating a dignified environment for teaching and learning.
“Together, let us support the President’s vision for education by furnishing our classrooms, empowering our teachers, inspiring our learners, and ensuring that no child is left behind,” the Fund said.
